In more than thirty years of reading relationship energy, I have seen “space” mean rest, avoidance, indecision and sometimes a desire to keep emotional access without responsibility. When the same person continues checking in, the mixed signal can keep hope active without resolving anything.
Do not guess what space means. Define it.
Ask what contact is for
Is the message practical, affectionate or a test to see whether you remain available? The pattern matters more than one friendly text.
A check-in is not automatically a request to rebuild.
Clarify the agreement
Ask whether space includes regular contact, exclusivity and a time to revisit the conversation.
Clear terms protect both people from quietly living under different rules.
Do not reward confusion with unlimited access

If they wanted distance, they must tolerate that you also use it.
Watch the next action
Energy may show attachment and fear together. Behavior reveals whether the person is moving toward a decision.
