Receiving a compliment can produce an unexpected urge to argue, joke or change the subject. You may wonder whether your hesitation is intuition warning you about the speaker. In more than thirty years as an energy reader, I have found it useful to ask what the discomfort is responding to before treating it as a verdict.
Praise can be sincere, clumsy, strategic or simply unfamiliar. The sensation alone does not identify which one you are encountering. I feel self-trust grows when you can notice your reaction without making yourself accept every compliment or reject every person who offers one.
Identify what happened around the words
Was the compliment specific and appropriate to the setting? Did it arrive with a request, an expectation or pressure to become closer? Notice the sequence. Appreciation that leaves you free to respond differs from praise immediately used to claim your time. You can evaluate that difference without claiming to know the speaker’s private thoughts.
Also ask whether you would feel the same discomfort with someone whose behavior is consistently respectful. If so, the experience of being noticed may itself feel unfamiliar. That does not make your reaction wrong. It gives you another possible explanation to consider alongside any concern about this particular person.
Practice a response that does not promise anything
A brief “Thank you, I appreciate that” accepts the words without creating a debt. You do not have to return an equally large compliment, reveal something personal or agree to a favor. Try allowing a short silence afterward. It may feel unusual at first, but you are permitted to let appreciation end with acknowledgment.
If the wording is too personal or the setting makes it unwelcome, you can redirect it. “I would rather keep this about the work” is a complete response. You do not need to receive inappropriate attention graciously merely because it was packaged as praise. The context belongs in your judgment.
Look for consistency over time
Compare the person’s compliments with how they respond to your independence. Do they remain respectful when you disagree or cannot help? Are their positive words supported by ordinary consideration? Those patterns provide better information than trying to determine sincerity from the intensity of a single moment.
For your own reflection, record one compliment and your immediate response, then return to it later. What part did you dispute? Was it factually inaccurate, too broad or simply difficult to believe about yourself? Keep the answer specific. You are learning how to receive information, not trying to force a permanent mood of confidence.
You can appreciate kind words while retaining the right to observe and choose. Let a compliment be one piece of an ongoing picture. Neither immediate suspicion nor instant trust is required for you to remain grounded in your own judgment.
