Potential is seductive because it allows you to stay in love with the best possible version of someone. You see their intelligence, tenderness, ambition, or spiritual depth and assume those qualities will eventually organize their behavior.
As a male advisor, I have learned to ask a less romantic but more useful question: What does this person consistently do with the qualities they already have?
Potential is not a shared plan
Someone can be capable of commitment without choosing it. They can understand your needs without meeting them. Ability and intention are different forms of evidence.
Do not turn their unrealized capacity into a promise they never made.
Watch repeated ordinary behavior
Compatibility lives in returned calls, kept plans, honest conversations, and respectful conflict. Grand gestures are memorable, but ordinary reliability carries the relationship.
Look at a month of behavior rather than the emotional peak of one weekend.
Stop interpreting every gap as temporary
You may tell yourself they will become available after work settles, after the divorce is final, or after they heal. Some circumstances truly change; others become permanent waiting rooms.
Ask what they are doing now to move toward the future they describe.
Do not become the rehabilitation program
Support is part of love, but taking responsibility for another adult’s emotional growth creates an unequal bond. You cannot love someone into accountability.
A partner should be participating in their own change through action, reflection, and appropriate help.
Choose the present without becoming cynical
Evaluating actions does not mean abandoning hope. It means giving hope a foundation. People can grow, and growth becomes visible through new choices repeated over time.
You are not rejecting who they could become. You are deciding whether who they are today can build with who you are today.
Chemistry may introduce you to possibility. Character tells you whether possibility can survive real life. Choose the relationship that exists, then let earned growth expand it.
